Wind and Hail: What to Check

On September 14, 2008, the remnants of Hurricane Ike swept through, and NWS Louisville measured a 75 mph gust in the city. Nearly three in four customers of the local electric utility lost power, at the time the largest outage in Kentucky's history. On March 3, 2023, gusts reached 79 mph at both SDF and Bowman Field, where the wind flipped a small plane that had been tied down (NWS).

Hail has its own record here. The May 3, 1996 "Pre-Derby" storm dropped stones from golf ball to baseball size and caused about $20 million in property damage, and 2-inch hail fell at Churchill Downs on April 28, 2012 (NWS).

Tornadoes round out the list. The April 3, 1974 F4 ran from the State Fairgrounds northeast into Oldham County and destroyed about 425 homes in Jefferson County, KY. On April 2, 2024, an EF-2 crossed Prospect into Oldham County with 22 injuries, the county's most from one tornado since 1974 (NWS).

  • Missing or lifted shingles. Bare patches, folded tabs or shingle pieces in the yard.
  • Dents on soft metal. Gutters, vents and air-conditioner fins often show hail marks first.
  • Limbs on the roof. Even a branch that rolled off can crack shingles or the deck.
  • New stains indoors. A fresh ceiling spot or damp attic insulation deserves a prompt look.
  • Stay on the ground. Look from the yard or a window; the roofer brings the right gear.

What This Covers

  • Damage documentation. Dated photos, measurements and notes, yours to share with your insurer if you file.
  • Temporary protection. Tarping or sealing an opening so rain stays out meanwhile.
  • Repair when damage is limited. A section of shingles, a vent or a run of flashing.
  • Replacement when it's widespread. A tear-off and new roof when damage covers several slopes.

How Storm and Hail Damage Repair Is Priced

Storm work ranges from a small fix to an entire new roof, so cost depends on what the inspection turns up. For replacement, these published figures give a starting range; on an insured loss, your policy decides how costs are split.

From Inspection to Cleanup

  1. Ask for an inspection. Use the form or call (502) 555-0157, and mention the storm date.
  2. A roofer looks it over. One independent local roofer checks the roof and soft metals and photographs the damage.
  3. Findings arrive in writing. An itemized estimate for repair or replacement.
  4. You decide about a claim. If you file, you deal with your insurer directly and can include the roofer's photos.
  5. Contract and records. Read the cancellation terms before signing, and keep every receipt and warranty.

The Difference a Local Match Makes

A roofer based in the Louisville area will still answer the phone when a warranty question comes up next spring. Before you sign, ask for a local address, references, proof of liability insurance, and workers' comp if the company has employees.

What Your Insurer Will Ask For

Your claim is a matter between you and your insurance company. Expect it to want the storm date, photos inside and out, and receipts for any emergency tarping; what a roofer can add is evidence such as measurements and a written estimate. Questions about coverage, payouts or a disputed amount go to your insurer or the Kentucky Department of Insurance. We don't handle claims, and Kentucky doesn't allow a roofer to present itself as a claims or insurance specialist.

Kentucky law bars a roofer from offering to pay or rebate your deductible, and it caps anything of value a roofer may give you at $100. If your insurer turns down all or part of a claim in writing, you can cancel an insurance-paid roofing contract within five business days of getting that letter. Until that window closes, the roofer can't demand payment up front, and a cancelled deposit must come back within 10 days. More detail is on our Kentucky roofing rules page.

Questions Homeowners Ask

Will the roofer negotiate with my insurance company for me?

No. Documenting the damage and writing an estimate is where a roofer's role in the claim ends. Talking with the adjuster, agreeing on an amount and appealing a decision are up to you and your insurer, and the Kentucky Department of Insurance takes questions from policyholders.

Do I need impact-resistant shingles after a hailstorm?

No. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are a choice, not a rule, anywhere in Kentucky. Some insurers price policies differently for them, so call your agent first and ask the roofer to quote both kinds.

Someone knocked on my door after a storm. Is that allowed?

After a declared emergency, Kentucky bars roofers from soliciting door to door in the affected area for 90 days unless you invited them; ads, calls and websites stay allowed. Separately, a contract signed at your door can usually be cancelled until midnight of the third business day under the federal Cooling-Off Rule.
